Pop Warner to Co Sponsor Summit

Pop Warner to Co-Sponsor 7th Annual National Summit on Sports Concussion in AtlantaPop Warner continues its proactive concussion awareness initiative in  collaboration with the Sports Concussion Institute

Atlanta, GA – Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc., the nation’s largest and oldest youth football, cheer and dance organization will co-sponsor the 7th Annual National Summit on Sports Concussion at the JW Marriot in Atlanta on Friday, May 10th. The event is hosted by The Sports Concussion Institute.

The summit will feature medical professionals who specialize in neuroscience and sports medicine, including summit co-chairs Julian Bailes, MD and Jeffrey Hopp, ATC, LAT.

Dr. Bailes is Chairman of both the Department of Neurosurgery at NorthShore Hospital System and the Pop Warner Medical Advisory Board.

Pop Warner’s co-sponsorship of the summit is part of an ongoing initiative to educate its coaches and young athletes on the best practices to reduce the risk of concussions.

In 2010, Pop Warner was the first organization to institute a concussion rule that mandates that only a qualified medical professional can decide when an athlete can return to play after suffering a head injury. The rule mirrors Washington State’s Lystedt Law and states that any participant removed from practice, play or competition due to a head injury or suspected concussion may only return to the field once he or she has received written clearance from a licensed medical professional trained in the evaluation and management of concussions. It removes the parent and the coach from making the decision.

Last year, Pop Warner further elevated its leading approach to player safety when it became the first youth sports organization to limit contact in practice.

“We wanted to be a part of this national summit to understand new evidence-based research on the concussion topic and continue our proactive safety efforts,” said Jon Butler, Executive Director, Pop Warner Little Scholars.

“Protecting our young athletes is our number one priority and we will continue to be on the forefront of the issue by keeping up to date on new findings and being part of the concussion conversation. We are excited to join with other leading sports organizations also committed to ensuring our kids have the opportunity to enjoy sports in a safe environment.”

Pop Warner created the Medical Advisory Board in 2010 to ensure that the organization stays at the forefront of new health and safety issues and any medical developments that may affect its young athletes. The Pop Warner Medical Advisory Board is led by physicians with expertise in neurological sports medicine and follows guidelines by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Academy of Neurology (AAN), National High School Federation and the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA).

About the Sports Concussion Institute:
The Sports Concussion Institute (SCI) was established in 2005 by Founder and CEO Dr. Tony L. Strickland  to provide state-of-the-art assessment, treatment, and prevention services to: 1) Address the comprehensive concussion care needs of athletes of all ages playing high velocity sports; and 2) Provide specialized neurobehavioral care to people with closed head injuries, acute and chronic pain, balance disorders, and memory and learning disorders.  www.concussiontreatment.com

Pop Warner Partners with National Football Foundation

The National Football Foundation (NFF) and Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc., the nation's largest and oldest youth football organization, today announced a partnership to enhance the sport through a variety of initiatives and research projects that promote participation, health and safety, academic achievement, and the community involvement of the young athletes who play football.

"Pop Warner's partnership with the National Football Foundation presents a tremendous opportunity to positively influence more athletes and improve the sport of football," said Jon Butler, executive director of Pop Warner Little Scholars. "Both organizations share a common belief in the life-long lessons that come from playing football, and we look forward to collaborating."

The two organizations will work closely to identify trends and opportunities to strengthen the youth sports experience.

Spearheaded by Pop Warner, areas of collaboration will include coaches training, equipment changes, and the promotion of academic achievement and community leadership by those involved with the sport.

"We are excited to team with Pop Warner, using the full power of the National Football Foundation to expand on our collective initiatives to promote the good in the game," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. "Pop Warner and the NFF share a mutual understanding of the power of football in developing leadership and academic achievement in our nation's young people, and by working together we will magnify our ability to ensure the strength of our sport."

The inaugural season of the East Georgia Pop Warner Youth Football League came to a close Saturday.

The Grovetown Grizzlies and the Augusta Elite led off a series of three games at Greenbrier High School with the Mitey Mite Bowl.

Every game during the season was played at a high school stadium.

"We got a lot of support from high school coaches this year," said Jimmy Cronan, the league's CEO and co-founder who also serves as one of the Grizzlies' coaches.

Cronan was happy with the volunteer participation from parents and coaches and that the league totaled 567 football players and cheerleaders.

The league isn't participating in Pop Warner regional playoffs this year, wrapping up instead with interleague championship games.

The Elite were the first winners of the Mitey Mite Bowl, beating the Grizzlies 12-6.

The Elite scored first on a 66-yard run by Antrell Buggs. The Grizzlies tied it
up on a 30-yard run by Courtney Kominek with 2:56 left in the first quarter.

With 9:12 to play in the second quarter, Myles Jernigan made a 2-yard plunge to put the Elite up for good.

The final 2:41 was a flurry of activity.

The Elite had the ball on their 25 but fumbled on the first play. With a chance to tie or take the lead, the Grizzlies fumbled at the Elite 14. The Elite was forced to punt and the Grizzlies had 40 seconds to go 20 yards, but the Elite held.

SOUTHEAST REGIONAL MEETING UPDATE
On Saturday March 10th, 2012 the Southeastern Region of Pop Warner had their annual meeting in Orlando Florida. The newly formed East Georgia Pop Warner League was represented by Burt Rayburn ( president), Christine Ivey ( Training Coordinator) and Andrea Smock ( Secretary). The early morning breakout sessions started at 7:30 with Burt attending the Football orientation, Andrea attending the Cheerleading orientation, and Christine attending the Scholastic orientation. At 9:00 the official meeting took place. There are 16 leagues in the Southeast Region, with two new leagues in Georgia. With East Georgia being the largest: Two new Leagues are: South Georgia Pop Warner league and our league the East Georgia Pop Warner league. As new members we didn't have voting rights yet, but we will at next years meeting. The day long meeting discussed the year end profit and loss statement as well as the many fundraising opportunities available for each league. The Rules committee discussed the specific rules for the youngest group, the tiny mites, as well as raising the weights for some of the older divisions. All the changes were voted on and passed by a wide margin. There was also discussion on the wording of the background check applications that was amended by a unanimous vote. The football and Cheerleader coach of the year was announced as was the volunteer of the year. Additionally two members were voted into the Southeastern Regions Hall of Fame. Overall it was an exciting, overwhelming, wonderful experience. The meeting was held at the luxurious Rossen Creek resort Motel. It's a wonderful golf course motel with conference rooms and three large pools. It was truly magnificent and all of the board members truly enjoyed the accommodations. There will be other workshops and meetings in the future and I'm sure other board members will enjoy the chance to visit our partners in the Southeastern region sometime very soon. Stay tuned as our Coaches Meeting is coming up SOON!! If you are interested in joining as an association please contact us, or if you just want to coach. WE ARE ALL MAD (Making A Difference) in youth football and it starts right here. Sincerely, Burt Rayburn President East Georgia Pop Warner
